National Survey Finds Almost 80% of Adults Have Extra Coats and Over 75% Want to Easily Donate Them. Solution: The Burlington Coat Drive

A community distribution of donated coats from the 2019 Burlington Coat Drive.

For the past 14 years, our partner, national off-price retailer Burlington Stores, has encouraged customers to help their neighbors in need by donating a new or gently worn coat at any Burlington store location nationwide. The donated coats are distributed by local nonprofits that are part of Delivering Good’s network of more than 800 community partners to people in need within Burlington’s store communities. The program is taking place now through January 4, 2021.

Although the need for coat drives is a familiar concept, we wanted to dig a little deeper this year to find out how the thoughts and actions of the general public have been impacted by the events of 2020. Here are some of the key findings from a recent survey which sampled adults age 25 to 54 years in America:

  • Burlington customers alone have donated more than 2.3 million coats since 2006, yet nearly 80 percent of Americans still keep coats in their closets that they rarely or never wear.
  • Cleaning out closets was a popular activity this year, with nearly 70 percent of people having done so during quarantine. One of the top motivators for people to clean their closet was to donate to help someone in need. When donating, emotions and feelings people expressed were empowered, positive, accomplished, fulfilled and grateful.
  • Over 65 percent of consumers were more likely to donate their coats if they knew their contributions were going to individuals in need in their local communities. Through our network of community partners, Delivering Good ensures all coats donated through the Burlington Coat Drive are distributed within each store’s community.
  • With over 75 percent of respondents looking for ways to give back differently this year due to the pandemic, the Burlington Coat Drive is certainly an easy way to make a difference in the lives of individuals and families nationwide.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the need to help those most vulnerable stay warm this holiday season is greater than ever. To donate a new or gently worn coat to someone in need in your local community, find your Burlington store location here. As a thank you for your donation, customers will receive 10% off their entire purchase.

Burlington is keeping the health and well-being of its customers and associates a top priority. Stores are following safety regulations and providing a clean and safe shopping experience, all while spreading warmth within their communities this holiday season.
